Spetses

Spetses promenade and cathedral complex

Spetses may be on our list of lesser-known islands, but that wasn’t always the case. Back in the 1960s this island was actually a hot spot for celebrities. At various times, it hosted guests like Elizabeth Taylor and Marilyn Monroe. It is still a favorite among Europe’s glitterati, especially during the summer months. Want to rub shoulders with your favorite celeb? You’ve got a good chance visiting Spetses.

Perhaps it’s a “lesser known” island because it caters to an affluent class of visitors, but like everyplace in the country, they need tourist dollars and with so many fancy hotels looking to fill rooms, there are deals here to be had.

The island is only four miles long and does have a small handful of local independent cabs. This is a useful amenity since private cars are not allowed in town. The island has the look and feel of a life that has long since given way to noisy motorcars, mobile phones an WiFi. The 19th century is alive and well on Spetses and they have the horses and carriages to prove it.
