This area is said to be the playground of a the mischievous specter of a four-year-old boy named Ottie Cline Powell. Powell died on the mountain more than a century ago after wandering off without permission from the local schoolhouse. Hikers regularly report having encounters with Ottie when spending the night at Punchbowl.
